13 September 2011 — My friend Bryan has been telling me for a long time that I should write kids’ music. I think he means that I’m pretty close to writing kids’ songs already. Though I’m pretty decent with songwriting assignments, I have to have the right angle and idea. That’s evaded me for months (possibly years). Anyway, I was hanging out with Bryan, his wife Phia (for whom I’ve already written a song), and their baby girl, Bella last Saturday. On Sunday, accustomed as she is to finding me asleep on their couch, Bella asked where I was. So I wrote her this song. I started banging it out on Sunday night and finished it last night.

Bella, oh baby
do you wanna go out?
The sun’s so bright and there’s hardly any clouds.
You’d have to ask your daddy but I can’t see how
he’d wanna keep you in when you wanna scream and shout.
Well that’s how it goes when you can’t wipe your nose
and that’s how it goes when you don’t choose your clothes
well, that’s how it goes when you can’t count your toes
That’s how it goes when you’re two years old
Bella, oh baby, do you wanna go out?
The sun’s so warm and there’s never any clouds.
You’d have to ask your mama but she can live without
You running round the house and acting so loud
